Exhibitions Visited and Preparing to Exhibit
Sally Hewetson will give a short presentation on work by Metis (Canadian French/First Nation) textile artist Nathalie Bertin whose work she encountered at a local museum in Orillia, Ontario, while on a recent visit to Canada. The traditional Metis design style is described as a blend of First Nation geometric beading and highly detailed European floral design. Ms. Bertin created beautiful works based on local fables and legends, using traditional materials such as leather, fur, fish scales, quillwork, beading and embroidery.
Marian Deaton will tell us about ‘Collaborating in Conflict: The Yeats Family and the Public Arts’ an exhibition which she visited in Boston recently. Marian has some photos of the embroidery displayed at this exhibition, which will serve as great inspiration for those of who have yet to finish (or even start?) our piece for the Yeats Sisters Exhibition.
In advance of our forthcoming exhibitions, Eithne Carey will offer a demonstration and discussion of various methods of stretching, mounting, framing and hanging diverse textile artworks to display to their best advantage. This will include how to stretch a piece on foam board (as for the Yeats Sisters exhibition) and how best to have it ready to hang.
